Here in Ireland one of the most popular ways to add space to your home is by converting the attic. Attic conversions make great use of unused existing space and are generally a lot less costly than adding on an extension.
If you are of a certain age, you will have grown up surrounded by psychedelic wall paper; geometric shapes and of course G-Plan furniture. This eclectic style we called home in the 1970′s is making a big comeback albeit (I hope) in a more subdued sophisticated way!
I love it when I come across new and innovation products. AND when that product is 100% Irish it’s even better! Dotty Furniture is one such company. William O’Connor set up Dotty Furniture when he was made redundant from his job in September 2011.
When it comes to choosing which photo’s to display, I can be the most indecisive person on the planet. An arrangement I may like on Monday could be totally out of favour with me by Friday! Enter Picture Ledges. They give me the freedom to change and rearrange them as often as I like without having to punch more holes in my walls.
Complementary colours are very appealing to the eye and bright bold colour palettes can look stunning. Use turquoise with soft shades of pastel pinks for a soft feminine look or add some punch with hot pinks and cranberry.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you can’t have failed to catch Madonna’s half time performance at the XLVI Super Bowl. The Queen of Pop made a spectacular entrance into the stadium on a dazzling gold throne designed by iconic designers Jimmie Martin.
“I can do it myself. It’s not like I don’t have any ideas, I know a lovely colour that would work on my walls, a pretty fabric that would make beautiful drapes. I’ll get started next weekend and re-decorate”. But next weekend, turns into the weekend after, spring turns to summer, the kids are back to school and before you know it, it’s Christmas again!
Sound familiar?
Hi there! I’m Jenn and I’m a writer for Design Shuffle, a social media website that tracks the top interior design ideas and trends from across the globe and features stunning inspiration! I’ve been writing about home decor for more than a decade and I get giddy over fabulous rooms, beautiful light fixtures, antiques, and more. Every day I start with a strong cup of coffee and a few of my favourite design blogs, like Emerald Interior Design, and when I found out I’d be guest posting here today I was so excited. Thanks for having me Karen!
Between the weather and the economy we have more than our fair share of grey in this country! But grey doesn’t have to be the colour of doom and gloom. In fact soft tones of grey teamed with strong vibrant colours is one of my favourite colour combinations at the moment.
Mirrors are an essential decorative feature as they intensify light and add depth to a room. Used correctly mirrors add elegance and drama to a space and brighten up dark drab corners. They work great in every room particularly in hallways which are often lacking in natural light.
Decorating a space with white visually increases space and light and can add a dramatic impact to a room. But developing a successful design can be difficult. Get it wrong and you end up with a space that appears cold and sterile, but get it right and you can achieve stunning results.
While trying to decide what to blog about this week, my husband told me I’m always blogging about girlie things and why don’t I do something for the boys. So I decided to give the guys a few hints on feathering their nest, or in other words….. decking out the ultimate Lads Pad.
More and more I am finding the need to “Explain” my profession. As soon as I tell someone I’m an Interior Designer, I usually get the response of, “Cool job” or “I’ve could do that, I’ve always had a knack for decorating” or “It must be great to have such a fun job”.
Do you have a Place to Relax? A place that’s comfortable, cosy, quiet. A place to zone out from the world and immerse yourself in a good book.
Packed with gorgeous interiors, recipes, fashion, not to mention some fantastic gift and decorating ideas for Christmas.
Don’t miss the Ideal Home Show in the RDS this weekend. With the banks queuing up to lend us money……NOT! few of us are in a position to buy our “dream home”. So the theme this year is “Don’t Move, Improve!” As usual there’s a fantastic selection of exhibitors showing how to turn our homes into the bright stylish comfortable living spaces we yearn.
Hello and welcome to my Blog
My name is Karen Hughes and I'm an Interior Designer from Dublin, Ireland. I’m passionate about design and I started this blog as a way to connect with others just as passionate as myself. I tend to ramble on about all sorts of things, projects I’m working on, people, places and things that inspire me (and some that don’t). So put the kettle on, get comfy and settle in. I hope you enjoy your visit and don't forget to say hello. Visit my website to find out more about my services and view my work.
